NEW DELHI, May 13 (Xinhua) -- India will acquire its first nuclear-capable
submarine Akula II from Russia on a 10-year lease by the end of this year, a
senior Indian Defense Ministry official said Wednesday.
"Russia was scheduled to deliver the submarine by next month. But, there
has been a delay in delivery as the submarine to be delivered to India met with
an accident in Russia, killing a number of sailors. And, now it has been
postponed till year end," the official said, on condition of anonymity.
He said that the Indian Navy would get the submarine which is now
undergoing repairs to be ready for sea trials before being finally delivered to
"Russian Defense Ministry told us that in seven to eight months' time, the
nuclear submarine will reach India," he said.
The official said that the Indian Navy will acquire the submarine on a
"Initially it will be for 10 years, following which a decision to extend
the lease or not will be taken by the Indian Defense Ministry," he said.
