Shi Guangwu and his wife Zhang Zhengfang, disabled survivors from the May 12 massive earthquake in southwest China, had run a small shop before the quake destroyed it and their home. They moved into a prefab home and re-opened the shop soon. Before the 2008 national day holidays Shi's family moved into the new permanent residence that he built with a subsidy of 23,000 yuan (3,333 U.S. dollars) from the government. Under the encouragement of Shi Guangwu, 80 percent of the villagers of Zaoshu village built their permanent houses; the life of quake survivors was gradually back on track in Sichuan.
