2nd Hong Kong Games opens

    HONG KONG, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong held a large-scale opening ceremony at the Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground on Saturday to celebrate the opening of the 2nd Hong Kong Games.

    The 2nd Hong Kong Games, a major multi-sports event in Hong Kong with 18 District Councils as the participating units, attracted more than 2,300 amateur athletes from all over Hong Kong.

    Addressing the opening ceremony, Secretary for Home Affairs of Hong Kong Tsang Tak-sing encouraged Hong Kong people to actively participate in sports.

    "Hong Kong would host the 5th East Asian Games (EAG) with a record of 23 sports items and yielding 281 gold medals. The 2nd Hong Kong Games, as a prelude to the EAG, would further enhance the interest of the people in sports and test the efficacy of venues of the EAG." said Tsang.

    A total of six sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, table tennis, swimming and tennis, will be featured in the games which will run nearly a month from May 9 to 31.
