PRAGUE, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) and Japan on Monday agreed to cooperate on the preparation for a new document on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to replace the Kyoto Protocol at the Copenhagen conference on climate change in December.
The agreement was announced by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and Czech President Vaclav Klaus, whose country holds the current EU presidency, at the EU-Japan summit.
Klaus said the EU-Japan talks on climate issues mainly focused on energy-saving technology.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is now preparing a document that will take effect after 2012, when the Kyoto Protocol on lowering emissions expires.
