SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, May 3 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people, including four Indian policemen, were injured in fresh stone pelting clashes in Srinagar, the summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir on Sunday, police said.

A police vehicle turned turtle in old city after its driver lost control and damaged a shop following the heavy stone pelting. Four policemen including a Deputy Commandant got injured in the accident, said police.

The authorities had imposed severe restrictions in some parts of old city since Sunday morning fearing anti-election protests.

The protests erupted after Kashmiri Muslims took to streets in the afternoon and tried to take a march.

The protesters were expressing anger over the continued restrictions and Indian general elections in the region.

Police and paramilitary troopers fired bullets into air and tear smoke canisters to quell the protesters, who retaliated by throwing rocks and stones on them.

Meanwhile, hardliner Syed Ali Geelani Sunday repeated a 50-hourstrike call on May 7 and May 13, the days Srinagar and Baramulla parliamentary constituencies are scheduled for the fourth and fifth phase of polls of the Indian general elections.

Moderate Muslim leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq urged people to offer prayers at Jamia Masjid Mosque Friday.

Only 26 percent of voters turned out in the third phase of general elections in Kashmir on April 30, because of calls of boycott by Muslim leaders.
