BEIJING, April 30 -- An exhibit
called "Ten Thousand Years of Icebound Behemoths" opened on Tuesday at the
Beijing Museum of Natural History.
It is the mainland's first display of mammoth
remains.
The exhibition is co-sponsored by the Beijing Nature
Museum and Russia's Yakut-Sakha Republic. There are two mammoths on show.
One is a male adult, with the full head and left
foreleg preserved. It's about 18,000 years old. Another, a cub, features the
full upper half of the body. It's about 40,000 years old. They are the
best-preserved mammoth remains.
The organizers will also exhibit whole skeletons and
tooth fossils of mammoths and several other species of prehistoric mammals.

"Mammoths died out just a few thousand years ago.
Through the exhibition, we can gain an awareness of environmental protection, as
several other species face the dangers of annihilation."
The organizer will hold special activities for
children.
