JAMMU, India-controlled Kashmir, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Two militants of
Lashker-e-Toiba militant outfit (LeT) and a woman were killed by troopers of
Indian army Saturday in a gunfight in India-controlled Kashmir, Indian army
said.
According to details provided by Indian army spokesperson Saturday evening,
the two militants and a woman believed to be their accomplice were killed by
Indian army troopers and Indian police in Doda village, 180-kilometers
north-east of Jammu, the winter capital of India-controlled Kashmir.
The encounter took place after a joint party of Indian army and police
cordoned off the village on specific information about the presence of LeT
militants in a house, army said.
"The encounter took place today around 0900 a.m. (0330GMT) hours in morning
and continued until afternoon. Two militants and their woman accomplice have
been killed. We have also recovered two assault rifles from the site of
encounter," said Biplav Nath, Indian army spokesperson in Jammu.
This is for the first time that a "woman accomplice" of militants has been
killed in gun fight in India-controlled Kashmir.
Nath told Xinhua that an investigation is going on to probe the link of the
woman with the militants but according to his information she was an accomplice
of militants.
In the past one month has seen a surge in militancy related incidents in
the region.
LeT outfit is accused for carrying out the last year's Mumbai attack that
claimed 165 lives. The group has threatened to carry out lethal attacks in
India, its spokesman last month said.
At least 30 militants, many of them foreigners who infiltrated across the
Line of Control into India-controlled Kashmir, have been killed in fighting with
Indian army and police since March. About 10 Indian soldiers also were killed in
the fighting.
