DHAKA, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A boy was killed and his sister injured in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district, 191 km southeast of capital Dhaka, as cyclone "Bijli" ravaged the coastal area Saturday early morning, private news agency Bdnews 24.com reported.

    A local Officer Humayun Kabir was quoted as saying a tree fell on the boy, killing him on the spot and wounding his sister in "Bijli" strike.

    The storm was losing strength gradually after making landfall in Bangladesh and moving toward the eastern Indian state of Tripura, Met officials said.

    The cyclone also damaged thousands of thatched houses and big area of croplands, uprooted trees, and knocked off power poles.

    Parts of Cox's Bazar and port city Chittagong, 242 km southeast of capital Dhaka, were without power and telecommunications.

    Authorities had shut Chittagong sea and airports, evacuated hundreds of thousands of people from coastline and put emergency services on stand-by.

    More than 200,000 people had been evacuated to shelters in the Chittagong and Cox's Bazar districts.

    The storm also swept over several offshore islands, and many fishing boats may have been caught in the rough seas while returning to shore.

    Devastating cyclone "Sidr" ravaged Bangladesh's southern and southwestern areas on Nov. 15, 2007, leaving more than 3,000 people killed, millions affected.
