JAKARTA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's
Reconstruction and Rehabilitation for Aceh and Nias has ended its 4-year mission
to rebuild Aceh province and Nias island after tsunami hit the area with over
170,000 fatalities and a massive destruction on infrastructures and houses.
The agencies officially closed its operation on April
16 and all the remaining works would be continued further by local government,
head of the agency Kuntoro Mangkusubroto said at the State Palace here after the
closing ceremony of the agency.
Among the residual works were building of roads and
houses for hundreds of victims of tsunami, according to Governor of Aceh Irwandi
Yusuf and Kuntoro.
"There are 400 families still live in barracks now.
They were the victims of the tsunami," Kuntoro said. He said they were still
waiting for the finishing of the houses being built by Saudy Arabia and Kuwaiti
governments. They are parts of about a half million displaced persons during the
tsunami in December 2004.
Currently roads at west coast of the province were
being built and nearly a half of the total 161 kilometers had been completed,
said Irwandi.
Over 93 percent of the donors commitment of 7.2
billion U.S. dollars had been received by the agency, said Kuntoro.
"This shows the trust of international on us, it was
the highest realization of international commitment. The others only got the
highest realization of 40 percent, Honduras," he said.
The catastrophe had drawn global solidarity, as aids
and humanitarian assistance from many countries soon flew in to Aceh days after
the tragedy which also devastated coastal areas of Asian countries, totally
killing more than 250 people.
The agency had already completed more than 140,000 houses,
13 airports, 23 sea ports, more than 700 school buildings, over 1,100
health facilities, about 70,000 hectares agriculture land, and others,
according to a release from the agency.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on his
speech at the palace said that Indonesia which is vulnerable from natural
disaster must stand ready to face it.
Indonesia has set up sophisticated early warning
system in some of its coastal areas to prevent the repeat of the massive
fatality like in Aceh.
