VIENNA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan who is on a visit here, said on Wednesday the goal of Turkey is to become a full member of the European Union (EU), for which Turkey is determined to carry out a series of necessary reforms.

In the joint press conference with his Austrian counterpart Michael Spindelegger held after their meeting, Babacan admitted that conservative forces in Turkey did not want to go this way. However, he stressed that joining in EU was a "right way," which could bring benefits to the people.

Babacan also highlighted that in order to be a full EU member, the Turkish government was determined to implement some reforms.

One-third of the Turkish law had been amended, while the improvement in economy and democracy had also been made, all of which meant a gradual approach to the EU standards, according to Babacan.

As referred to the doubts of some EU countries on Turkey's bid, he pointed out that Turkey's EU membership "would be a long-term project." Although the majority of Turks were Muslim, Turkey was a democratic country and its EU membership "will help to enrich the European Union," he said.

The two foreign ministers also said at the press conference that as both Austria and Turkey became the non-permanent members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, these two countries would strengthen the cooperation and coordination between them.

Spindelegger announced that experts of Turkey would be invited to the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get familiar with each other.

Babacan also believed that the two countries could cooperate well in dealing with the issues of the Middle East, the Balkans, and so on.

The two foreign ministers also said that these two countries had close relationship and would further deepen the mutual cooperation in various fields.
