CHISINAU, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Moldova's main opposition parties announced Saturday that they will stage a rally in the centre of Chisinau on Sunday.

The leaders of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Moldova Noastra Alliance -- the three oppositions which made it to parliament after the April 5 elections but which will hold a minority there -- made the statement at a joint press conference.

The goal of the rally is to inform the society about the situation in Moldova, in particular about the mass riots on April 7 and about the arrest of hundreds of innocent children by police, the opposition leaders were quoted as saying by local media.

"We know that hundreds of people have been arrested in Chisinau... Their relatives do not know where they are, they are not allowed to speak to lawyers," said Vlad Filat, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.

"Even if these children are guilty they need a fair trial," said Serafim Urechean, leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance, adding that at the rally "we will ask the authorities to release the children and stop torture and terror against them."

The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu asked the ruling Communists to provide the list of all the arrested people and the accusations brought against them.

Ghimpu stated that the Sunday rally will be directed against President Vladimir Voronin and the Communist regime in Moldova.

The opposition leaders said that the rally will be peaceful.

"Tomorrow's rally is only the beginning," Urechean said, stressing that participants will be "thousands of hundreds and even millions" in the future.

Violent protests broke out after the central election commission announced Monday that the ruling Communist party won a landslide victory in the April 5 parliamentary elections. The opposition claimed the vote was rigged and protesters stormed the parliament and the presidential building Tuesday.
