CHISINAU, April 11 (Xinhua) -- President Vladimir Voronin on Saturday asked the European Union to send a mission to Chisinau to observe the situation there after recent election protests.

Voronin made the request during a phone conversation with the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy to discuss the situation in Moldova following parliamentary elections on April 5.

Violent protests broke out after the central election commission announced Monday that the ruling Communist party won a landslide victory. The opposition claimed the vote was rigged and protesters stormed the parliament and the presidential building Tuesday.

Voronin asked EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana to send a mission to Moldova to better inform European officials about the situation in the capital city. He said the government would present material on the protests, including photos and video, to the European institutions.

Solana agreed with the proposal, saying that the request would be considered first and foremost, according to the presidential press service.

Solana reiterated support for the Moldovan leadership concerning the situation following the parliamentary elections. He said it was important to establish a constructive dialogue between state authorities and the opposition based on the interests of Moldova and its citizens.
