HOUSTON, April 9 (Xinhua) -- High winds are fueling grass fires across the
U.S. state of Oklahoma Thursday night, media reports said.
Approximately 20 homes have been destroyed by a fire in Choctaw near 23
Street and Choctaw Road, some 30 km east of Oklahoma City, updated reports said.
Multiple homes and developments are still in danger. A fire raging in
Midwest City, about 16 km east of Oklahoma City, has already destroyed at least
100 homes earlier in the evening.
Firefighters said they are urging residents to evacuate the nearby areas.
An estimate 11,000 households are currently without power because lines
have been destroyed by fires and high winds, they said.
The highway is closed west of U.S. 81 south of SH17, in Grady County, west
to Oklahoma City, due to a large grass fire.
Oklahoma City Fire Department said they have sent 35 fire trucks in
operation. The fire at Eastern and Hefner has already burned about 75 acres.
