Special Report: Palestine-Israel Conflicts

BEIRUT, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The senior official that was killed in Lebanon was "a victim of inter-Palestinian feud," As-Safier daily quoted security sources as saying on Wednesday.

Senior Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) official Kamal Medhat was killed by a roadside bomb Monday at the entrance of Palestinian refugee camp of Miyeh Miyeh in south Lebanon.

The security sources said he was killed by a Palestinian-made bomb which was likely prepared in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Helweh in south Lebanon.

Medhat, deputy assistant of PLO representative in Lebanon Abbas Zaki, was "victim of inter-Palestinian feud, due to a clear split within Fatah movement ranks," since new arrangements were underway to separate the management of the organization from the military wing, the security sources said.

The daily added that Medhat was to become in charge of Fatah military wing, while a senior Fatah commander Sultan Abul Aynien was to be in charge of the management.

Abul Aynien warned Tuesday that the assassination could be the beginning of a "cycle to target Fatah officials in Lebanon."

The report also quoted a senior Lebanese security official as warning against turning Ain el-Helweh camp into another Naher el-Barid camp, which was completely destroyed following fierce clashes in 2007 between the Lebanese Amy and fundamentalist group of Fatah al-Islam inside the camp.

A Lebanese government source said Tuesday that Medhat's assassination was a "warning to Lebanese leaders."
