JAKARTA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesia passenger plane with 122 people on board made an emergency landing in Hang Nadim Airport on Batam island of Indonesia, a private news portal quoted an airport official as saying on Monday.

Airport public relation official Hendrawan told detikcom "The plane made an emergency landing," adding that all passengers are safe.

Franswenas, an investigator from the National Transportation Safety Committee, said that the Boeing 737-200 operated by Sriwijaya Air was on route of Tanjung Pinang to Jakarta and encountered engine trouble shortly after taking off.

"One of the engines was having problem, so that the plane was diverted to Hang Nadim airport, the nearest place to land," the investigator told Xinhua.

Passengers said while they were in the air, they were not informed that the plane suffered a machine damage. Officials gave the information after they landed.

Over 250 people were killed in a series of plane accidents about three years ago in Indonesia. As a result, the European Union banned 51 Indonesia's airliners to enter the group's territory on July 6, 2007.

The country's parliament on Dec. 17 passed a new regulation on aviation with stricter safety standards. The new rules were hailed by the EU.
