Canadian PM announces funding for bridge connecting United States 2009-03-21 05:13:31   Print

OTTAWA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday announced 13.5 million Canadian dollars (10.8 million U.S. dollars) in funding to upgrade a crucial trade link between Canada and the United States.

The Blue Water Bridge in Point Edward, Ontario which connects to U.S. Michigan State is the second busiest border crossing for commercial traffic in Canada, Harper said at a Point Edward press conference.

The funding will allow construction to be completed two years ahead of schedule, which will reduce border congestion and improve trade, Harper said.

The work on the bridge, including new approach lanes and inspection booth, will start in May.
