Vice president: Al-Qaida suicide bomber behind Yemeni explosion 2009-03-17 04:19:51   Print

SANAA, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Yemeni Vice President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi said Monday that the explosion that killed 5 people in Hadramawt province was a suicide attack by an al-Qaida militant, according to official news agency SABA.

Four South Korean tourists and their Yemeni guide were killed and six people wounded in an explosion at about 6:45 p.m. local time (1445 GMT) on Sunday while a number of South Korean tourists were paying a visit to a mountainous area in the historical city of Shibam, Hadramawt.

The report said the vice president came to the spot and held an exceptional meeting with the leadership of the governorate, including military and security officials.

During the meeting, security agencies briefed him on more details of the attacks and the investigation.

A security official said 12 Islamist suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack, and they are members of jihad groups believed to have information on the actual perpetrators of Sunday's bombing.

Foreign tourists have been frequently targeted in the impoverished country, which houses al-Qaida and other terrorist groups.

In January 2008, two Belgian tourists were killed by al-Qaida-inspired militants in the Hadramawt province.
