GAZA, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic Resistance Movement, or Hamas, said on Monday that a possible prisoners' swap between the movement and Israel is possible within the coming a few hours.
If both Hamas and Israel accepts each other's conditions, around 1,450 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails will be freed for the release of abducted Israeli corporal Gilad Shalit.
A website of Hamas's armed wing Izz ad-Din al-Kassam said in Arabic on Monday that a prisoner exchange deal with Israel leading to the release of Shalit is possible at any moment.
Hamas armed wing and two minor militant groups abducted Shalit in summer of 2006 in an armed attack at an Israeli army base southeast of the Gaza Strip. Two Israeli soldiers were killed in the attack.
The website said "Israel is displaying flexibility in regard to Hamas demands in intensive negotiations in Cairo. The main hurdle in the way of an agreement is Israel's demand to deport more serious terrorists."
Arab media is reporting that Hamas leadership in Damascus has approved the deal and that the ball is in Israel's court. Egypt, which mediates the deal called on exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal to be in Cairo within the coming 48 hours.
Earlier on Monday, Egyptian and Israeli media sources revealed that highly-wanted Hamas armed wing leader Ahmed Jabari, believed to be close to the Shalit abduction, has been in Cairo for four days to finalize the deal. ¡¡
