Indonesian president: Indonesians should show the country's democracy maturity

    JAKARTA, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Monday that all Indonesians should show the world that the country is already mature in democracy.

    In a speech marking the opening of campaign of 2000 legislative general election, the president said that all parties should guard 2004 general election success achievement and even improve it in 2009 election.

    "This is our mutual responsibility, our common mission. Let's show the world that all Indonesians are getting mature and ripe in democracy," he said.

    The president said, this year Indonesia's democracy will be tested again and now is the time that Indonesia should become an example for the world.

    "In 2004 election we show the world a bright achievement of secured, peaceful, ordered, fair, and just election," he said.

    Yudhoyono said the success of 2004 election was due to participation and contribution of all parties. He told all election participants that general meetings should be conducted orderly and responsibly.

    The president asked the Indonesian people to succeed the 2009 election by using their voting right properly.

    Thirty eight political parties will compete in this year's legislative election, scheduled on April 9, plus six local partiesin Aceh. More than 500,000 candidates will compete for 560 seats in the House of Representatives (DPR), 132 seats in the Regional Representatives Council (DPRD) and more than 16,000 seats at provincial, regency, and municipal level.
