DAMASCUS, March 14 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of British parliamentarians held talks with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in this Syrian capital Saturday to push the peace process in the Mideast region.

"We need to talk to Hamas to make progress (in the Middle East peace process) because they represent a big proportion of the Palestinians," Clare Short, from Britain's ruling Labor Party, told reporters here.

The delegation's visit was aimed to urge the British government to hold talks with Hamas, Short said.

The delegation groups four members of the British parliament. One Irish parliamentarian and one Scottish congressman were also present at the meeting with Hamas.

Hamas's representative in Lebanon said the two sides discussed the ongoing meeting in Cairo among Palestinian factions, Gaza's reconstruction and the prospect for the Mideast peace process.

Some representatives from the Italian and Greek parliaments are expected to visit Damascus next week for talks with Meshaal.
