YANGON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's 16 and under tennis team cruised to the Junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Qualifying round to be held in Australia in April on Monday.
Myanmar upset Singapore 2-1 in the third-place playoff in the 2009 Junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying tournament at the Theinbyu Tennis Court here and entered to the qualifying round in Australia scheduled on April 15-20.
Uzbekistan beat Pakistan 2-1 in the final of the pre-qualifying tournament on the same day.
The top three teams -- Uzbekistan, Pakistan and host Myanmar --will play with Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, China's Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines and Thailand in the qualifying round of the Junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania tournament in Australia.
Myanmar's 14 and under boys team, which stood first in the 2009 World Junior Tennis Competition Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying tournament at the same venue from March 2 to 4, along with Singapore and Sri Lanka and 14 and under girls team of Myanmar, Singapore and Sri Lanka got the spots for the World Junior Tennis Competition Asia/Oceania Qualifying round to be held in Malaysia from May 5 to 9.
In the 16 and under Junior Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying tournament, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka entered to the qualifying round last Wednesday.
2009 Junior Davis Cup, Junior Fed Cup and World Junior Tennis Competition Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying tournament, participated by nine countries -- Bahrain, Mongolia, host Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Malaysia, kicked off at the Theinbyu Tennis Court here last Monday.
It is the junior teams pre-qualifying event which hosted by Myanmar for the first time.
Bahrain, Mongolia, host Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Uzbekistan appeared in the Junior Davis Cup and Kazakhstan, Malaysia, host Myanmar and Sri Lanka in the Junior Fed Cup, while Kazakhstan, host Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Singapore in boys and host Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Singapore in girls events of the World Junior Tennis Competition.
Meanwhile, Myanmar hosted the Davis Cup matches for two times. Myanmar hosted the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group Four tournament for the first time in April-May 2005, in which Singapore and Bangladesh qualified for the Group Three tournament.
Myanmar hosted the similar tournament for the second time in May 2007, participated by 40 players from 10 countries -- Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, Syria, host Myanmar, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The 10 countries divided into two groups and Syria and Tajikistan qualified for the Group Three after defeating host Myanmar and Bangladesh 3-0 each respectively in the final day and host Myanmar finished third in the five-day tournament.
Myanmar also finished third in the 2003 Davis Cup regional tournaments in Sri Lanka.
