JAKARTA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- General Chairman of Indonesia's Golkar Party Jusuf Kalla said, for the first time, that his party should appear the winner in the forthcoming legislative general election.

"Do we want to have presidential candidate from Golkar? Therefore we should have a big capital by winning the legislative general election with majority votes exceeding other political parties," Antara news agency quoted Kalla as saying during a get-together with his cadres in Tanjungkarang, Lampung, on Sunday.

He said that by winning the legislative general election, the Golkar party, the biggest party in Indonesia, will have a high pride. Hence, Kalla called on his cadres to work hard to win the general election.

Kalla, who is also Indonesian Vice President, reiterated his readiness to join the race for the Indonesian presidency which is scheduled to be held in July 2009.

"In response to the people's request to me (to join the race for presidency), I would be ready to be nominated as a presidential candidate," he added.

In 2004 legislative elections, Golkar garnered more than 22 percent of the votes, becoming the largest party in the country. But observers here said that in the forthcoming legislative elections Golkar will face heavy pressure because the party has splited into several factions.

The country will hold legislative election on April 9 and 38 political parties will take part in the election.
