CANBERRA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Some 1,000 tourists are being evacuated from Fraser Island in Australia as cyclone Hamish heads south towards the central Queensland coast, according to local media on Sunday.

The Australian Association Press (AAP) reported that the Lady Elliot Island and Heron Island were also evacuated on Sunday morning as a precaution to the cyclone.

In the meantime, up to 10,000 residents of Queensland's Wide Bay region are being told to consider getting out before Cyclone Hamish arrives.

The cyclone is expected to cross the Queensland coast on Tuesday morning between Bundaberg and Hervey Bay.
