ISLAMABAD, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The Senate Foreign Relations Committee of Pakistan on Thursday passed a resolution appealing for immediate release of a kidnapped United Nations official.
The Committee appealed to the kidnappers to release John Solecki, head of the UN refugee office in the southwestern city of Quetta unharmed through an unanimous resolution, according to the official Associated Press of Pakistan.
"The Committee feels that Mr. John Solecki was doing humanitarian work for the people of Balochistan while in Quetta and he is, in no way responsible for any wrongs that have been done to the people as a consequence of government policy. Punishing an innocent man would, therefore, be wrong and immoral and also weaken the cause that the kidnappers espoused," said the resolution.
The Committee also urged the government to take immediate steps to redress the grievances outlined in the demands of the kidnappers so that issues concerning the people of Balochistan are resolved and the sense of injustice removed.
A group called Baloch Liberation United Front (BLUF) that claimed responsibility of the kidnapping of John Solecki said the UN was given four days to play its role in release and recovery of1109 missing Baloch people in return for John Solecki's release.
They issued a four-day life threat deadline which is coming to an end on Thursday.
John Solecki was working for UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He was kidnapped on way to his office in Quetta last month.
