DHAKA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Despite announcement of general amnesty for rebel soldiers of border guards Bangladesh Rifle (BDR)by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday, rebellion at the BDR Headquarters in capital Dhaka continued.
Police said at least five people including two army officers and three civilians were killed and 30 others wounded during the mutiny at the paramilitary BDR Headquarters in the west of Dhaka city.
It could not be ascertained the fate of BDR chief Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed who leads 67,000 BDR personnel.
The BDR soldiers, whose primary task is guarding the Bangladesh frontier with India and Myanmar, staged a revolt at their headquarters Wednesday morning to press for their demands concerning heir salary and other benefits.
The rebels in the morning opened fire at the army officers, who commanded the BDR soldiers on deputation, complaining that they are mistreated by the officers.
A rebel told private television ATN Bangle that at least 10-15 officers were killed at the start of the mutiny at the Darbar Hall(Conference Hall) of the BDR Headquarters. The official confirmation about the actual casualty figure was not available.
Earlier, army was called out from Dhaka Cantonment to put down the unrest. They took positions surrounding the headquarters complex with cannons and machine guns.
In the evening, Bangladesh's Prime Minister Hasina had a trouble-shooting talk with a rebel delegation in presence of the chiefs of the army, navy and air force at her official residence. After hectic negotiation, Hasina declared amnesty for the rebels and assured to meet their demands.
Rebel delegation leader Touhid, a deputy assistant director of the BDR, told reporters that they promised to the prime minister to lay down their arms after the declaration of the amnesty. They returned to the headquarters at 6:30 p.m. local time.
But, despite the amnesty announcement, rebel BDR soldiers declined to lay down their arms as per their leaders' commitment to the prime minister.
Resident close to the BDR Headquarters heard sounds of fresh firing at about 9:15 p.m. from inside the besieged headquarters complex.
The rebels using microphone are demanding lifting of the army officers from commanding positions from all the 46 BDR units in 13sector all over the country.
"If we lay down arms, army officers will repress us," they said.
The rebels demanded, "We want army free BDR...We'll provide our own security," rebels said through microphones. They said, "We are not enemy to anyone...army officers torture us."
They also want written promise from the prime minister about the announcement of general amnesty.
The rebel border guards brought allegations of corruption against the army officers, alleging that the army officers take away money meant for the soldiers. "We will do whatever needs to realize our demands," the rebels said.
The capital Dhaka remained unusual clam and people rushed to their homes shutting their usual businesses. Traffic on the sprawling city street was also thin.
