Prominent Fashion Weeks |
|
A fashion week is a
fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows
fashion designers or "houses" to display their latest collections in
runway shows and buyers to take a look at the latest trends. Most
importantly, it lets the industry know what's "in" and what's "out"
for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the
fashion capitals like Milan, Paris, London, and
New York City. In the early and mid
2000s, fashion weeks sprang up around the globe to draw attention to
designers elsewhere.
In the major fashion
capitals, fashion weeks are semiannual events. January through March
designers showcase their autumn (fall)/winter collections and
September through November the spring/summer collections are shown.
Fashion weeks must be held several months in advance of the season
to allow the press and buyers a chance to preview fashion designs
for the following season. This is also to allow time for retailers
to arrange to purchase or incorporate the designers into their
retail marketing.
The schedule begins with
New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week. The penultimate fashion
week is Milan Fashion Week and the
schedule ends with Paris Fashion Week .
These four cities are the traditional "big four" fashion weeks that
are followed by new emerging fashion weeks globally. The Menswear
shows occur in between autumn(fall)/winter and spring/summer in
Milan.
Some fashion weeks can be
genre-specific, such as a Miami Fashion Week (Swimwear),
Prêt-a-Porter (ready-to-wear) Fashion Week, Couture (one-of-a-kind
designer original) Fashion Week and Bridal Fashion Week, while
Portland (Oregon, USA) Fashion Week shows some eco-friendly
designers. |

Originated in 1910, Paris fashion
Week is the oldest fashion event.
It's said that New York knows the business,
Milan makes the workmanship, London lays the courage, yet Paris
presents the dream.
The 7-day fashion week for
2009 Spring/Summer Haute Couture fashion
collection wrapped up on Jan. 28, and the Autumn/Winter 09
collections kicked off on March
4.

Milan is renowned as one of the world
capitals of design and fashion. The English word millinery, referring
to women's hats, is derived from the name of the city. The Lombard
metropolis is famous for its fashion houses and shops (such as along
via Montenapoleone) and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza
Duomo (reputed to be the world's oldest shopping mall).
As
one of the four most important fashion weeks, Milan Fashion Week
rised up late but has been recognized as the “indicator” for the
fashion design and buying trend across the
world. |

Established in 1961, London Fashion Week is
one of the traditional "big four" fashion
weeks.
On Friday Feb. 20, 2009, the
British Fashion Council announced that London Fashion Week will
relocate to Somerset House, WC2 from September 2009.
The BFC is celebrating its 25th year
throughout 2009. During the past 25 years, London Fashion Week has
had several homes including Natural History Museum, Duke of York's,
Battersea and Olympia. This new partnership with Somerset House will
see London Fashion Week, for the first time, located in the heart of
London and will allow a new approach to be developed as a legacy for
the 25th celebrations.
