Special Report: Tension escalates in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Feb. 6 (Xinhua)--- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid a surprise visit to Baghdad on Friday and is holding swift meetings with top Iraqi officials, the state run Iraqi television reported.

    Ban met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on the latest provincial elections, the first for the country since 2005, and other major issues like security and the role of UN in Iraq in the future, the report quoted an unidentified source as saying.

    It is Ban's second visit to Iraq which came a day after preliminary results showed Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's bloc swept the provincial elections held on Jan. 31.
