    BEIJING, Feb. 5 -- A 3-year-old girl became the youngest person ever in China to recover from bird flu on Tuesday.The girl, surnamed Peng, was hospitalized last month in north China's Shanxi Province.

    She was discharged home Tuesday from the No.4 People's Hospital in Taiyuan, the provincial capital of Shanxi.Holding the baby girl in his arms at the hospital, father Peng Zhiwen thanked everyone involved.

    The provincial health department said the 3-year-old is the first of eight people infected this year in China to recover, and also the youngest ever in the country.The girl developed a fever on Jan. 7 in Hunan Province on a trip with her father.

    One week later she was sent to Fenyang Hospital near her home in Xiaoyi, Shanxi Province.

    The girl was then transferred for analysis to the Shanxi Provincial Children's Hospital and confirmed infected with bird flu on Jan.17.Finally she was placed in intensive care at the No.4 People's Hospital in Taiyuan for treatment.

    China has reported eight human cases of the H5N1 strain this year, including five deaths.
