RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Friends of Vasco Association (AAV) said on Tuesday that they will try to help the Vasco da Gama soccer team to get out of debt.
The team currently is debt to the tune of some 50 million U.S. dollars. The fan group association hopes that the monetary aid will help the team to be able to become more competitive and crawl out of the hole in which they are currently in.
The association counts on individual donations from its members. Such members include the former state governor, Sergio Cabral Filho, businessmen, judges, economists.
The president of the association is economist, Isac Zagury. The aspiration of the group is to offer a sense of relief to the club's president, Roberto Dinamite.
The president is currently seeking the renewal of old sponsors as well as the signing of new ones, which will help to get the club out of the financial hole.
According to Zagury, "The situation at Vasco is so severe that it needs immediate attention. The cost of the team's debt compromises the daily activity of the team. In any business's case like this, they would attempt to renegotiate with the creditors and try to drastically reduce the amount of their debt."
The Friends of Vasco Association plans on a relief program that will extend over the next two years. Their main goal is to alleviate the team's financial problems, allowing them to become more competitive and competent.
The current situation has proved to be troublesome to the 2009team. In their first match, Vasco lost by a score of 2-0.
