BEIJING, Jan. 24 -- This year's Spring Festival travel peak for the Beijing Railway Station was reached on Thursday. Three-hundred and thirty thousand passengers passed through the station -- the record high in the station's 50-year history.

To help secure the huge passenger volume, a large number of policemen have been deployed to direct the flow of people.

Soundbite: A police officer: "The combination of security check by machine and by man has not only ensured the smooth flow of passengers, but has also guaranteed efficiency in doing our job."

In the waiting room, special armed police and railway guards are helping to check tickets.

Police are checking to make sure tickets are purchased legally and not from ticket scalpers.

Soundbite: Police officer: "We are launching a special checking operation to see whether a lot of passengers bought tickets from illegal dealers. By looking at the tickets markup, we can trace ticket scalpers."
