NEW YORK, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Empire State
Building in New York is celebrating the Chinese New Year by illuminating its
tower lights in red and yellow, symbolizing happiness and wealth.
Deputy Consul General Dong Xiaojun and other
representatives from the consulate general of the People's Republic of China in
New York attended a special ceremony at the landmark building on Friday.
The new year marks the Year of the Ox, a symbol of
prosperity, fortitude and hard work. It is one of 12 animals in the Chinese
zodiac. The Chinese lunar year begins on Monday, and the special lighting will
run from Friday evening until Monday night.
The Year of the Rat was celebrated in 2008.
Soaring 1,454 feet (about 443 meters) above Midtown
Manhattan, the Empire State Building is the "World's Most Famous Office
Building." With new investments in infrastructure, public areas and amenities,
the Empire State Building has attracted first-rate tenants in a diverse array of
industries from around the world.
James Connors, general manager of the Empire State
Building, presided over the ceremony.
