UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations-African Union
Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said on Wednesday hundreds more troops will be
deployed in the troubled Sudanese region within the next two months to reinforce
the peacekeeping mission there.
The troops are expected to arrive by March from Egypt, South Africa,
Senegal and Bangladesh, UNAMID said, adding that further troops will arrive from
Nepal, Nigeria, Egypt and Ethiopia later in the year.
The move, in line with UNAMID's long-standing pledge to bring the planned
peacekeeping force in Darfur to full strength, followed an agreement earlier
this month between involved parties on accelerating the deployment.
The hybrid force was set up by the UN Security Council to ease the
humanitarian crisis and monitor peace deals in Darfur, however, the deployment
of its authorized strength of 26,000 military and police personnel had been
delayed by continued fighting and slow provision of units and equipment.
Troop levels exceeded 60 percent of the full strength earlier this month, a
UN news release said.
