BANGKOK, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said here Wednesday that the Thai government is ready to cooperate with international organizations and concerned countries regarding the problem of Rohingyas, local media reported.

A Thai military official on Jan. 16 dismissed a BBC's report claiming the Thai Navy had ill-treated the Rohingyas from Myanmar and Bangladesh who sought work or asylum by pushing them out to sea and setting them adrift.

On Tuesday, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) chief spokesman Ron Redmond said in Geneva that the agency had asked the Thai government to give it access to 126 Rohingya boat people in custody in southern Thailand in order to assess their situation and determine whether any of them are in need of international protection.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said in Bangkok that the Thai government is ready to cooperate with international organizations and concerned countries regarding the Rohingya issue but they have to look at the origin and fact about this problem, the website of Thai-language newspaper Krungthep Turakij quoted Abhisit as saying.

"The origin of this problem is not from Thailand and all parties must accept this point. Regarding the UNHCR's request of access to the Rohingya, I think, the UNHCR should first discuss with the Thai government to see how we will cooperate," said Abhisit.

Thailand has regarded the humanitarian and human rights issues as the government's policies and is ready to explain these to any organization, said the Thai prime minister.
