CHANGSHA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- A 16-year-old male student had been confirmed as infected with bird flu in central China's Hunan Province, the fourth case of human bird flu found in China in 2009,said a provincial government official on Monday.
The student, surnamed Wu, fell ill on Jan. 8 in southwestern Guizhou Province, said the official from the Hunan provincial health bureau.
Wu was transferred to a hospital in Huaihua City on Jan. 16 when his condition worsened.
The patient is still in a critical condition, the official said.
According to the test result on Monday from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Wu tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.
The patient had had contact with poultry, the official said. But no more details had been revealed.
The people who had close contact with the patient are under medical observation. No one has been found ill so far.
In the northern Shanxi Province, a two-year-old girl surnamed Peng was confirmed to be infected with the same virus on Saturday.
The toddler had been in critical condition and doctors had been trying to brought the virus under control, local health officials said on Sunday.
The 67 people who had close contact with the girl had been under observation but no one was found infected.
A 27-year-old woman surnamed Zhang died of bird flu in east China's Shandong Province on Saturday, which was the second death caused by avian influnza in the country in the new year.
The first death this year from bird flu was a 19-year-old woman named Huang Yanqing who died in Beijing on Jan. 5.
Bird flu patient in N China still in critical condition
TAIYUAN, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- A two-year-old girl who was confirmed Saturday to be infected with bird flu in north China's Shanxi Province is still in critical condition, local health authorities said Monday.
The girl surnamed Peng is being treated at the Fourth People's Hospital in the provincial capital of Taiyuan. "The patient is in critical condition, but her vital signs are normal," said a Shanxi Provincial Health Department spokesman. Full story
No bird flu epidemics detected in China provinces after girl infected
BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said on Sunday that no bird flu epidemics were detected in Shanxi and Hunan provinces after a two-year-old girl was confirmed to have been infected with the H5N1 strain of virus in Shanxi on Saturday.
The girl, surnamed Peng, was found ill on Jan. 7 in central Hunan Province. Her grandparents took her to Luliang City of Shanxi on Jan. 11. Peng was still in critical condition on Sunday. Full story
Woman dies of bird flu in east China
JINAN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- A woman had died of bird flu in east China's Shandong Province, the second death caused by avian influnza in the country in the new year, provincial health authorities reported on Sunday.
The 27-year-old woman surnamed Zhang, who lived in Jinan, the provincial capital, fell ill on Jan. 5 and went to hospital when got worse, said an official of the provincial health department. Full story
China sets up nationwide testing network for bird flu virus
BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- An official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday that a nationwide network for the testing of bird flu virus has been established.
Shu Yuelong, vice director of virus control and prevention with the CDC, said the network connects 63 labs in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Full story
