BUDAPEST, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn called on Hungary's government to carry out further structural reforms so as to guarantee sustainable growth, Hungarian News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Strauss-Kahn had a talk with Hungary's Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany in Budapest on Tuesday. He told reporters after the talk that things were progressing as well as possible, but further steps must be taken.

Strauss-Kahn said it would be up to the Hungarian government to decide what measures to take. Should IMF find them acceptable, it will finance them, he added.

The managing director said that he saw no reason for concern about the Hungarian currency forint's exchange rate, and forint has stabilized at an expectable level.

The IMF does not support general tax cuts but support restructuring taxes in Hungary, Strauss-Kahn said.

Strauss-Kahn said in a statement published in Budapest that recent rate cuts by the National Bank of Hungary had been appropriate considering an expected fall in inflation and a consolidation in markets. Any further rate cuts should be gradual and cautious, he added.

Gyurcsany agreed on the need of changes, reforms and further measures. He said that so far Hungary had successfully reduced the impact of the global financial and economic crisis on Hungary. The IMF had an important part in it and its cooperation made it clear that Hungary relies on a strong financial background and is able to finance itself, Gyurcsany said.

Strauss-Kahn also met Hungary's Finance Minister Janos Veres, governor of National Bank of Hungary Andras Simor and Fidesz leader Viktor Orban on Tuesday.
