BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- A host of movie
stars will attend the Golden Globes in Los Angeles later Sunday, for what is
expected to be the glitziest event so far in this year's awards season.
After Hollywood labor strife shut down the
Golden Globes in 2008, organizers promised their show would be back, bigger and
better than ever.
More than 50 Hollywood stars have been set as
presenters at "The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards" to be telecast live on NBC
Sunday at The Beverly Hilton.
Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie,
Clint Eastwood, Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep are just a few of the
heavyweights vying for awards at the Globes, regarded as second only to the
Academy Awards.
The Globes are often regarded as an indicator of the
movies and actors who will go on to win honors at the Academy Awards on Feb.
22.
Unlike the Oscars, however, the ceremony has
different categories for dramas and comedies.
Brad Pitt's fantasy The Curious Case of Benjamin
Button is nominated in five film categories, as are the stage-play adaptations
Doubt and Frost/Nixon.
The show could be punctuated with a solemn moment,
though. Nearly a year after his death, Heath Ledger might be honored as best
supporting actor for his frenzied performance as the Joker in the Batman
blockbuster "The Dark Knight."
Steven Spielberg will receive this year's Cecil B.
DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award for his "outstanding contribution to the
entertainment field."
The Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign
Press Association, a group of about 90 reporters covering show business for
overseas outlets.
Sunday's Golden Globes party will get
started at 8:00 p.m. EST (0100 GMT, 0900 Beijing Time, Monday).
