KABUL, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of Afghans observed Ashura Day in Afghanistan capital city of Kabul amid tight security on Wednesday.
All the roads leading to the big mosques and mourning places have been blocked by police and personnel of the law enforcing agencies were stationed in sensitive areas to cope with any possible eventuality.
By chest beating and flagellation, the faithful mourners mostly youth show their support and sympathy with late Hussain and his loyalists martyred in Karbala.
The historic incident took place in 10th Moharam, the first month of Islamic calendar, and the Muslims over the world, particularly the Shiite sect, commemorate the day every year to pay homage of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Islam Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), who was brutally killed by Yezed forces in Karbala of Iraq1369 years ago.
Mourning processions have also been held in other cities of Afghanistan and no untoward incidents have been reported so far.
Taliban regime during its six-year reign had imposed restriction on Shiite mourners to observe Ashura.
