MEXICO CITY, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a massive landslide in northern Guatemala rose to 35 on Tuesday, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction in Guatemala said.

According to news reports from Guatemala City, apart from the confirmed 35 deaths, the disaster also inflicted injuries to 21 people, all of whom were sent to hospital for treatment.

Some 30 people were still missing, a spokesperson for the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction said.

As small-scale landslides continued to hit the region, rescue workers stopped their operations Tuesday morning for fear of further casualties, the spokesperson said.

More than 100 local residents and workers from a nearby coffee plantation were in the area when tons of rocks rolled down and demolished a stretch of road in northern Guatemala on Sunday.

Local media said the road had been hit 14 days ago by a landslide, which killed two people and left three missing.

The road was labeled as "dangerous" afterwards and drivers and walkers were warned to avoid traveling on it. Local authorities have set up road blockade to prevent the entry of vehicles and people.

An official commission was still investigating the cause of the landslide.
