    PARIS, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- France condemned Saturday Israeli ground attack in the Gaza Strip, saying the military action has complicated efforts by the international community to find a truce in the region.

    "France condemns the Israeli ground offensive against Gaza as it condemns the continuation of rocket firing (by Hamas against Israel)," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement Saturday evening.

    "This dangerous military escalation complicates the efforts by the international community, in particular the European Union and France, the Quartet members and the states of the (Middle East) region to end the fighting, bring immediate aid to civilians and reach a permanent ceasefire," the statement said.

    Israel sent ground forces into the Gaza Strip on Saturday after more than a week of air strikes since Dec. 27, 2008, which had left more than 450 people dead and thousands of others injured.

    French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to begin his Middle East trip on Monday to try to push a truce between Israel and Hamas.

Israel begins Gaza ground incursion to destroy Hamas "terror infrastructure"

    JERUSALEM, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- As the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Cast Lead operation entered its eighth day, the IDF Saturday evening began its ground incursion into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, vowing to destroy "terror infrastructure" of Hamas.

    "On Saturday evening, the IDF began its ground incursion into Gaza," an IDF spokesman told Xinhua on the phone, saying that Cast Lead operation is now entering the second stage. Full story

Some 20 Palestinians killed after Israeli ground invasion of Gaza

    GAZA, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Hassan Khalaf, an official at Shifa hospital in Gaza City said that about 20 Palestinians were killed on Saturday evening, after Israel launched ground invasion against Gaza Strip.

    Khalaf said the 20 killed include both militants and civilians. Full story

Hamas: Israeli army clash with Gaza militants

    GAZA, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Israeli soldiers and Gaza militants exchanged fire in northern and eastern Gaza Strip on Saturday night, Gaza ruler Hamas said.

    The movement said in a statement that heavy exchange of fire and armed clashes took place between Gaza militants and Israeli ground forces which launched ground incursions into the densely populated enclave on Saturday night. Full story

Israel' Barak says Gaza operation not to be short, easy

    JERUSALEM, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Israel Defense Forces (IDF) operation against Palestinian militants in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip will be neither short nor easy, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Saturday evening.

    Barak made the remarks while addressing the nation in a special televised press conference following the launch of the IDF ground incursion. Full story

    CAIRO, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Egypt on Saturday night strongly condemned Israel for launching its ground operation in the Gaza Strip earlier in the evening, the official MENA news agency reported.

    In a presidential statement, Egypt called on Israel to stop its attacks against Gaza "immediately," warning Israel of the consequences of sending ground troops into Gaza. Full story
