CAIRO, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa said Saturday that he will pay a visit soon to the UN headquarters to press for a resolution of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.

At a press conference on Saturday, Moussa said he will visit the UN "by tomorrow night or Monday at the most" to call for an emergency meeting of the UNSC on the situation of Gaza, which has been under intensive Israeli attacks since Dec. 27, 2008.

Moussa said he, along with an Arab ministerial delegation to the UN, will urge the UNSC to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.

Major members of the international body should work for the convocation of the UNSC meeting, said Moussa, adding Arab countries would not accept "any procrastination in holding a UNSC session," the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.

On Dec. 27, 2008, Israel launched intensive assaults on Gaza, killing at least 462 Palestinians and injuring more than 2,300 others, according to Palestinian sources.

On Wednesday, Arab foreign ministers held an emergency meeting, calling on the UN to shoulder its responsibility to put an end to the Israeli attacks on Gaza.

The Arab foreign ministers urged the UNSC to hold a meeting to discuss the Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and issue a resolution on the situation.

The UNSC on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but did not vote on the draft resolution.
