LUSAKA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Cholera cases in Livingstone in Southern Province of Zambia have reduced following a reduction in rainfall, Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) reported on Friday.

    Livingstone District Commissioner Francis Chika said only one person is still admitted to the cholera center in the city.

    Chika has since warned the community to be extra careful when rainfall activities increase in the coming weeks. He has also urged all Livingstone residents to uphold basic preventive measures in order to halt further spread of the disease.

    "The cholera situation in Livingstone has stabilized owing to the weather situation. This has led to more discharge of people and only one person is remaining at the cholera center currently," he was quoted.

    The commissioner said the district was doing well in curbing the further spread of cholera and has therefore called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders.

    Livingstone district has recorded 19 cholera cases since the disease broke out on December 4.

    Chika has said the outbreak of cholera which the district experienced an eye opener to all stakeholders. There was always need to put up measures before a disaster strikes.

    The district have temporary closed more than 11 drinking places in various townships in Livingstone, the ZANIS said.

    Livingstone Town Clerk, George Kalenga said the closure of the drinking places in townships was one of the ways of controlling the further spread of cholera.

    Kalenga disclosed that night clubs that had poor sanitation conditions would also be temporarily closed.
