JAKARTA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- More than 10,000 people from the Indonesian Justice and Prosperous Party took to the streets on Friday, protesting the continuing strikes by Israel on the Gaza Strip, killing hundreds of people and injuring over 1,000 others.
Carrying banners to condemn the airstrikes and show support to the Palestinian people, the protesters marched through in the capital Jakarta and staged rally outside the United Nations office and finally gathered in front of the U.S. embassy.
Shouting "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar (God is the mighty)", the demonstrators from the Islamic party appealed to the United Nations to issue a resolution to stop the Israeli aggression and demand the United States to play its dominant role in the Middle East to halt the Israeli strikes.
"We want the UN to adopt a new resolution to block the Israeli strikes that killed innocent Palestinians," Ahmad Ramli, a coordinator of the rally, told Xinhua.
Indonesia, which has no diplomatic relation with Israel, condemned the Israeli airstrikes, and sent humanitarian aid and expressed support to the struggle of the Palestinians this week.
The protesters carried pictures of victims of the Israeli strikes, many of them babies and children.
Outside the U.S. embassy, over 500 policemen have been on guard with water canons as the protesters gathered and made speeches.
In his speech, Chairman of the party Tifatul Sembiring asked U.S. President-elect Barack Obama to change the U.S. stance on the Palestinian issue.
Indonesia, with over 87 percent of its 230 million population Muslims, has long been supporting the struggle of the Palestinians to establish an independent state.
