CANBERRA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- An Australian man fighting with British defense forces has been killed in a firefight with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.
The unnamed soldier was fighting with Britain's 1st Battalion in Helmand province, a volatile area in the south of the war-torn country.
The soldier was given immediate first aid and was evacuated by helicopter but later died, according to a report by Australian Associated Press on Thursday.
"The death of this soldier has left everyone in Task Force Helmand deeply saddened. Whilst words cannot ease their devastating loss, our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues at this time," Task Force spokeswoman Paula Rowe said.
The man was not an Australian soldier. There are 16 men from Australia's Townsville city seconded to the British troops in Helmand.
