BUCHAREST, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic Liberal Party (DLP) supported by Romania's president was leading in the parliamentary elections, partial results showed Monday.

With 71.06 percent of the vote in Sunday's elections counted, the DLP obtained 33.29 percent in the Deputies's Chamber, the lower house of parliament, and 34.67 percent in the Senate, according to the Central Election Bureau.

The Alliance of Social Democrats and Conservatives trailed closely, with 32.51 percent of the vote in the lower house and 33.36 percent in the Senate.

The ruling National Liberals came third with 18.1 percent of the vote in the Deputies' Chamber, and its junior ruling coalition partner, the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania, got just over 6 percent.

The other political parties all failed to secure the 5 percent threshold required to qualify for seats in parliament, said Marian Muhulet, spokesman of the Central Election Bureau.

There were some 18 million eligible voters for Sunday's polls and voter turnout hit a historic low of 39.26 percent, according to statistics from the Central Electoral Bureau.
