UN climate change conference to be held in Poznan next month

    WARSAW, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Some 9,000 people confirmed their participation in the 14th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 4th meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, Alexander Saier, a UN official, said here Friday.

    The conference will be held in Poznan of Poland on December 1 to 12, 2008, according to Polish news agency PAP.

    The conference will be attended by ecological non-governmental organizations, politicians, state officials, delegates from international institutions, business and the media.

    The conference is to sum up to-date advances in climate protection and set out tasks for 2009.

    The conference opening ceremony on December 1 will be attended by Poland's and Denmark's prime ministers Donald Tusk and Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

    December 11 to 12, when 150 environmental protection ministers are due to arrive in Poznan, will be the crucial part of the conference. It will be opened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, in the presence of presidents of Poland Lech Kaczynski and Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo, and prime ministers of Sweden Fredrik Reinfeldt and Tuvalu Apisai Ielemia.

    The conference is organized by the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and hosted by Poland's government, with Poland's Environment Ministry coordinating the preparations.
