CANBERRA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said here on Friday his country's commitment to the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan was "about right", and there were no plans to increase troop numbers.
"We believe we've got our numbers about right, we have no plansto increase them," Rudd said, adding Australia's commitment was subject to annual review of the government's mission.
But Rudd also said that Australian could not surrender that country back again to al-Qaeda.
"The worst thing we can do is simply to allow Afghanistan to be reconsolidated again as a base for global terrorist operations," he said in a statement.
There are about 1,000 Australian soldiers in Afghanistan, the largest troop commitment of any non-NATO country.
US president-elect Barack Obama has called on other nations involved in the conflict to send more troops to the strife-torn country.
