CANBERRA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Indian officials said on Friday four Australians were killed in the Mumbai terrorist attacks and they were desperately trying to locate 37 others believed to have been at the sites hit by the terrorists.

Officials from India's Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said the dead include at least four Australians, a Japanese, an Italian, a Briton and a German. Canada has confirmed one of its nationals was also killed, according to a report of the Australian Associated Press.

Officials in Canberra have so far confirmed only one Australian death - Sydney timber merchant Brett Taylor, 49.

Friends have confirmed the death of another Sydney man, grandfather and former Woollahra deputy mayor Doug Markell, 71.

"We are urgently seeking to confirm the safety and welfare of 37 Australians who may be still in high-risk areas," an Australian foreign affairs department spokesman said Friday night.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Friday night put the number of Australians still unaccounted for at 36.

"We are doing everything possible to establish the whereabouts of those 36," he told the Nine Network, adding that he was deeply concerned "for the wellbeing of our fellow Australians who we can't track down yet."

The foreign affairs spokesman said it was believed 76 Australians were in areas directly affected by the attacks. A number of those had since been accounted for "but some Australians remain trapped".

Australia said it was sending an additional emergency response team to Mumbai on Friday, including consular staff, counsellors, and a senior medical officer.
