BEIRUT, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese army commander Gen. Jean Qahwaji
stressed the need to ensure security in Lebanon, specifically in the Bekaa
valley, in order to prevent smuggling along borders with Syria, local daily
As-Safier reported Thursday.
Qahwaji was quoted as saying that "the Bekaa might be a place where enemies
could take revenge against brotherly Arab countries," meaning Syria.
He made the remarks while addressing army commanders in the Bekka on
Wednesday, asking them to be on "maximum combat readiness to confront any
Israeli aggression."
Israeli officials have renewed threats this week, saying they would destroy
Lebanon's infrastructure in case of confrontation with Hezbollah.
Qahwaji also ordered the army units to be ready to "strongly confront
threats targeting the nation's security and freedom as well as its dignity."
He added that the army performs its defense role by safeguarding the
nation's unity and independence.
The army commander also highlighted recent operation by the army which
unveiled an Israeli spy ring, and said it brought relief to citizens and
upgraded Lebanon's security and stability.
