LAGOS, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's High Commissioner to Nigeria George Kumi
said 11 million Ghanaians had been registered to vote as the preparation for
Ghana's general elections reaches a crescendo, reported the News Agency of
Nigeria on Wednesday.
Kumi made this known in Abuja at a press briefing Tuesday on the
preparation toward the Dec. 7 elections, adding that the electoral commission
registers only those who are eligible to vote.
He said names of 50,000 registered voters who were later found to be
ineligible had been removed from the voter register so as to guarantee credible
elections.
He said those whose names were deleted from the voter register included
dead persons, minors and those with double registration.
He said the register was successfully reviewed through massive public
enlightenment and the determination of the electoral body to conduct hitch-free
elections.
The envoy noted that the chairman of Ghana's Electoral Commission and his
team were very experienced and competent in electoral matters.
He stressed that the independence and neutrality of the commission was
guaranteed by the country's constitution.
The High Commissioner gave the assurance that adequate security would be
provided throughout the elections.
The elections will take place at 21,004 polling stations in 230electoral
constituencies across Ghana.
