KABUL, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The visiting fact finding
mission of United Nations Security Council assured that UN would continue
support to the war-battered Afghanistan, a press release of Afghan Foreign
Ministry received here Tuesday said.
"We are here to support the people and the government of Afghanistan. The
United Nations would continue to back Afghanistan in the fields of security,
democracy, war on drug and terrorism," head of the 15-member delegation Giulio
Terzi Sant Agata assured Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta on Monday.
At the meeting, Afghan Foreign Minister briefed the delegation about the
situation in Afghanistan, relations with Pakistan and the war on terror in the
region.
The delegation which was headed by Ambassador Giulio Terzi of Italy and
attended by UN ambassadors and representatives from 14 other countries would
held meeting with Afghan leaders including President Hamid Karzai and civil
bodies representatives during its stay in the war-torn country.
UNSC's tour is taking place in the wake of increasing Taliban-related
insurgency and Afghans' complains that both Afghan government and the
international community have failed to ensure security and alleviate poverty in
the post-Taliban central Asian state.
Earlier on Monday, U.S. envoy to United Nations Zalmai Khalilzad told a
group of Afghan intellectuals that both the UN and the United States are
concerned about the situation in the post-Taliban nation.
